What seagrass baskets are actually good for

Honest notes on where they work, where they do not, and how to keep them in shape

Seagrass baskets are one of those products that look good in every interior photograph and then get used in ways they were not designed for. They are not waterproof, they are not rigid, and they are not suited to heavy loads. But for the right job, they are one of the most useful storage objects in a home. Here is a clear account of what that job actually is.

What they hold well

Throws and blankets are the ideal contents. A folded throw fits the medium basket (28 x 28 x 22 cm interior) with room to spare, and the natural texture of the seagrass looks right next to fabric. Magazines, books, and remote controls also work well. The basket holds its shape under that kind of load and the contents are easy to reach.

Children's toys are a common use and it works, with one caveat: small hard objects (building blocks, toy cars) will eventually work their way through the weave if the basket is dragged across the floor repeatedly. Use the basket on a shelf or in a fixed spot rather than as a portable toy box.

What to avoid

Wet or damp items will damage the seagrass over time. Do not use these baskets in bathrooms, next to plant pots that overflow, or for storing damp towels. The natural fibre absorbs moisture and can develop a musty smell or lose its shape if it stays wet.

Heavy loads. More than about 5 kg. Will cause the base to sag. The felt pad on the base of our medium basket protects the floor but does not add structural support. If you need to store something heavy, a lacquered steel or solid wood box is a better choice.

Keeping the shape over time

The most common reason a seagrass basket loses its shape is being stored empty and on its side. Keep it upright and with something inside. Even a folded cloth. To maintain the walls. If the rim starts to loosen, a thin line of clear craft glue along the inside of the rim holds it without showing.

We removed the large seagrass basket from the range in August 2026 after two complaints about the base losing shape. The medium size remains and has had no quality issues to date.
